America at the beginning of the 21st century: Following a Christian fundamentalist coup, the totalitarian Republic of Gilead is proclaimed. Women are forbidden to work, own property, read, or write. Some, after "re-education," are sent as "Handmaids" to childless households, where they are to be ritually impregnated by the husband. Their names are now derived from the "owner": Of-Fred, Of-Glen, Of-Warren…

Margaret Atwood's dystopian novel from 1985 is set in our time! It depicts a radically conservative society that, given current events, seems frighteningly close to reality. In 2000, the Danish composer Poul Ruders adapted it into a powerful opera, which the successful directing duo Immo Karaman and Fabian Posca are bringing to Kiel for the first time.
